Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The data submission file is in .csv or .tab format, or a format previously agreed upon with JSDP staff.
- An image has been provided as a thumbnail for the piece, with the rights secured and an appropriate caption provided.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
- If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
Copyright Notice
This Author Agreement acknowledges that you agree to the following terms unless the terms were otherwise negotiated between the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation and the contributor(s):
- The contributor(s) affirm(s) that the work being published is their original work, and that they have secured any necessary permission to publish or include any data or other materials that come from sources outside the project.
- The contributor(s) grant(s) the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation permission to publish and use their name, institutional affiliation, email address, and the biographical details they have sent us in connection with the publication of the project.
- The contributor(s) grant(s) the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation and the overarching project Enslaved: Peoples of the Historic Slave Trade (Enslaved) a perpetual, non-exclusive right to publish the work as part of the Journal and on Enslaved in any form that we choose: i.e., in its current form or in derived forms resulting from transformations, summaries, abstracts, excerpts, and the like.
- The contributor(s) retain(s) copyright, subject to the agreed upon publication and licensing terms over the work and is/are free to publish it in any other venue or format they choose, including pre-publication release and inclusion in an institutional or disciplinary repository.
- All materials published by the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation will always be available free-of-charge via the the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation web site as well as on Enslaved, or any successor title or locator address.
- All materials published on the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation site are offered under Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-Share Alike 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
- The Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation does not impose any submission charges, processing charges, or costs of any kind upon contributors. The Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation will endorse requests for publication subventions.
- The Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation will deposit the submitted research data, supporting documentation (i.e., the data dictionary or codebook), and some descriptive metadata to the Journal’s Dataverse data repository at the end of the review process. Dataverse is part of the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation’s strategy to provide long-term access to the research data submitted by the contributor(s).
- Where available, DOIs for the references have been provided by the contributor(s).
- Title image, if provided by the contributor(s), will have a resolution of 72 ppi with the following dimensions: 2000 pixels width and 1000 pixels in height. The files should be in one of the following formats: jpg or png. The contributor(s) must provide a caption for the image that describes its contents and source, otherwise it will not be used on the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation website.
- Card image, if provided by the contributor(s), will have a resolution of 72 ppi with the following dimensions: 500 pixels width and 350 pixels height. The files should be in one of the following formats: jpg or png. The contributor(s) must provide a caption for the image that describes its contents and source, otherwise it will not be used on the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation website.
- The contributor(s) acknowledges that their data article adheres to the stylistic, formatting, and bibliographic guidelines outlined by the Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation.
- The contributor has reviewed and ascents to Enslaved.org's Statement of Ethics (https://enslaved.org/statementofEthics).
The Journal of Slavery and Data Preservation’s Author Agreement also acknowledges the use of the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license which allows users to freely copy, redistribute, and build upon the work under the following conditions:
- Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
- NonCommercial — You may not use the material for commercial purposes.
- ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.
