Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Your piece is submitted in Microsoft Word .docx format.
  • Your piece follows the style guidelines outlined in the AAP Perspectives  style instructions.
  • Images are uploaded as supplmentary files, clearly labled as "Figure 1," "Figure 2," etc. Call-outs should be included in your manuscript to let us know where they should be placed, e.g., [Figure 1 here]. Captions should also be included in your manuscript, e.g. [Caption fig. 1: ]. While images can be embedded in the Word file we will also need them separately. Images should be 300 dpi at a minimum of 4 inches wide.
  • Any images or derivative materials must be used with the permission of the rightsholder. Use of copyrighted images require a signed permission request form from the image's rightsholder.

Author Guidelines

Corresponding authors must be registered and logged in to submit to AAP Perspectives. Once you are registered as an author, make sure that your piece meets the requirements outlined in the submission checklist above, then hit "Start Submission" to begin the submission process. During the submission process, you will be asked to enter names and contact information for any coauthors. 

Submitted papers should be formatted according to the APA Style Guide.

Layout

  • Title page: Give title, author names, and author affiliations.
  • Abstract: Each article must begin with an abstract, a 150-word summary of the essential points and findings of the paper.
  • Keywords: Provide 5 or so keywords to help readers find your paper more easily online
  • Biography: For each author, provide a three- to four-line biographical sketch that describes their discipline, current affiliation, and major research interests and works.
  • Text: References (including references to personal communications) are placed in the body of the text. Following each quotation (even an indented [blocked] one) or statement specific enough to need a reference, the citation is placed in parentheses, with the author’s name, followed by the year of publication of the work quoted or referred to, and the page or pages cited, thus: (Doe 1972, 145–157). If the author of the quotation is clear from the text, then the sentence concluding the reference should cite the year of publication and the page(s).
  • Tables and Figures: Embed tables and figures within the text after they are first mentioned (or “called out”), place them at either the top or the bottom of the page, and insert a blank double-spaced line to separate the table or figure from the adjacent text. Tables should be accompanied by a short descriptive title centered at the top of the table and, if applicable, a caption beneath. Images should be labeled by number (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.) and include a caption. Include source citation(s) and/or permission statements in table and figure captions as needed. (If a citation is included in an image or table caption, make sure it is listed in the reference section.)
  • Acknowledgments: Any acknowledgements should appear before the reference section.
  • References: All references should appear under a reference heading and be formatted according to APA style. Please see the “Reference” header below for links to reference guidelines.

References should follow the APA style guide. 

Images

  • If accepted for publication, images should be provided as separate files at minimum 300 dpi at planned publication size (minimum width is 4 inches). 
  • Proof of permission to use any copyrighted images must be obtained from the image’s rightsholder by the author and provided to MSU Press prior to publication. You can download the AAPP permission request letter here. 

Race and Ethnicity in Africa and the Diaspora

Initial submissions should be a 500-word proposal for your thought piece, uploaded as a Microsoft Word document.

Mapping the Partnership Landscape

If your piece has been accepted for AAP Perspectives Volume 3: Mapping the Partnership Landscape, please submit your accepted version to this section. 

Copyright Notice

Authors accepted for publication must agree to the terms of the Author Publishing Agreement before the piece can be published.

Copyrighted and Derivative Materials
